Just screwin' around

Sandpipers in New Orleans

This morning I decided to catch up on reading new postings from my favorite blogs, and I thought, I haven't "skimmed" for new blogs that I might find of interest in awhile.  You know, when you view your own or someone else's there's a little link at the top that says "next blog".  When I first started blogging, I would hit that little link and read until I was bored, got an idea for my own blog, or hit a road block (usually a blog where something is for sale).  So, I starting skimming.  Sadly, I ran across a lot of blogs that were old.....no blog posts for years.  I get it though.  Something happens in your life, and suddenly blogging is the last thing on your mind.  I suppose there are as many reasons for abandoning a blog as there are for starting one.  And although I realize that one day I might abandon my own, I would put more importance in making sure that my family deletes my Facebook page than worry about this silly thing......

Friday my youngest son turned 31.  We aren't big "birthday" people ~ you won't find us inviting loads of friends (family all live elsewhere, 100's of miles away) for a party.  We do the "what would you like for dinner, pie or cake" kind of thing along with a gift or two.  And my son says the words I had been dreading ~ "Pan dulce".  Pan dulce (which simply means sweet bread), is time consuming.  I first made it about 15 years ago when I was exploring bread recipes.  Well, my son absolutely LOVES the stuff.  So, yesterday I made pan dulce.  It takes a long time, because the dough takes forever to rise on that first go round.  The recipe says 1 1/2 hours, but its more like 2 to 2 1/2 hours.  At some point you have to make egg streusel, which goes inside (or outside if you want, but I don't like it that way).  Which is basically flour, sugar, salt and egg yolks - you make plain and chocolate.   Well, it had been a year since I had made it, and I was trying to read it without my glasses, and I made a boo-boo, and had to fix that, and in the meantime the dough was ready ~ well, to make a long story short, I was muttering "why couldn't he have just asked for pie", my better half asked if he could help, and FINALLY finished.  My son eagerly grabbed the first batch out of the oven, my husband told him they were pretty hot, and he said "I'll take my chances!"   It was worth it.  :-)

Love, 365

  1. Some recipes work really well when you double the yeast. I don't know if it would work with that, but perhaps worth a try?

I am stubbornly hanging on to my blog, writing every day still unless I'm sick. Reading back over the last 9 years makes me wish I'd had a computer and a blog much longer. There's so much on my blog that's ME. My life. Someday maybe I will be able to afford the blog2print thing. Although I'm not holding my breath. :)

  2. Hi, Ami! No, I really can't add yeast. In fact because our atmosphere is thin up here at at 6000 feet above sea level, and yeast actually grows faster! It's just a heavy dough, and takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r! Plus, I have to cut the dough ball into 14 pieces, roll each one out, put in the egg streusel, roll it up, pinch the seams shut, etc, ad nauseum. It's not a quick bread, that's for sure. I love it, but rarely make it because of the time. I suppose I should make it more often in the winter when I'm more apt to be indoors. ****However, I do appreciate your suggestion.

I do enjoy reading your blog....the antics of your young charges never fails to elicit a laugh or a frown, but always something! Thank you!

  3. It is rough when someone you've been reading for years just sort of ups and quits writing. Stuff happens, as you say. And someone's writing is a gift. I can't complain when someone stops giving me gifts. That would be entirely rude, taking the low road concerning the gifts I'd been given before.

I've been going through my links and weeding out those who aren't really active (just 'relegating' them, so to speak; putting them in a different section, lower down, until they either come back or I'm sure they've completely stopped.) I don't like to send my readers to 'dead' links, and I hope that wasn't the case for you!

    1. Nope! In fact I've found some wonderful blogs I now follow because they were/are on yours. Ami & House of Lime are two of those. In fact, I should thank you for listing them, because I might not have found them otherwise!

I don't really have the gift of writing. I just write for fun, and to post a gripe or two. You, on the other hand (& Michelle, love her stuff) have a wonderful gift I'll never understand or have. Words and I have an interesting relationship. Sometimes I get lucky, and sometimes they torture me, lol.

Thanks for stopping by, Sully! (or Suldong, as Ami would say, ha ha)

Spring has sprung, let the gardening begin....

This show of blooms was just the beginning! Of course they smell amazing, and all the pollinators think so too. Windows and back door open...
